Vineyards at Finca Altozano

California is known for its wine country, but did you know Mexico’s premier wine region, Valle de Guadalupe (Guadalupe Valley), is just south of the border? That’s right; a quick drive from San Diego, California, will take you to some of the best wineries in the world. You don’t want to miss out on this day trip; I will guide you to the most unforgettable Valle de Guadalupe wineries so you can make the most of your visit.

It looks like Napa Valley has some competition!

How to Get to Valle de Guadalupe

The Valle de Guadalupe wineries are located in Baja California, a Mexican state on the Baja California Peninsula.

It goes without saying that you’ll have to cross the border if you take a day trip to Valle de Guadalupe from San Diego. If you don’t feel comfortable driving or plan on drinking, you should take a tour; crossing the border and driving through Mexico is no joke. Many reputable and affordable tour companies make this journey. If you decide to take a tour, ensure their vehicles have the proper insurance and licensure before booking. I cannot stress this enough; you don’t want to get stranded in Mexico (been there, done that)!

From San Diego, the trip is approximately 2 hours. This may seem daunting, but the drive is mostly straight. Along the way, you’ll have a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean.

Alternatively, you can fly to Mexico and start your journey there. The closest airport to Valle de Guadalupe is Tijuana International Airport (TIJ). Although you can get a lot done in a day trip, an overnight stay in Valle de Guadalupe is the best way to get a taste of the wine country (literally and figuratively)! There are many gorgeous hotels in the area, and some wine tours will pick you up at your hotel. Personally, I think one day of wine tasting is enough; you can use the rest of your stay in Valle de Guadalupe to check out the city of Ensenada!

Valle de Guadalupe Wineries

There are tons of wineries in the Valle de Guadalupe; it is impossible to visit all of them in one shot. Realistically, you’ll have time to visit approximately three wineries on a day trip. Below are some of the wineries I feel should be on your “must-visit” list, each with a different charm.

Barón Balché

Address: Juanita Beltrán S/N, 22750 El Porvenir, B.C., Mexico

I think Barón Balché is the perfect place to start your day. There is plenty of outdoor seating with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and vineyards. Upon arrival, I tried some of their “vino tinto,” which translates to red wine. This, however, was not the only wine I sampled. Barón Balché gives tours of their winery, demonstrating their winemaking process from grape to glass. At the end of the tour, we were offered to try several types of wine. Let’s just say, if you take advantage of all Barón Balché has to offer, you will not leave thirsty.

Viña de Liceaga

Address: México 3 km 93, 22766 Villa de Juárez, B.C., Mexico

Viña de Liceaga has a different feel; this winery is much more “outdoorsy.” Upon arrival, you’ll be seated at a picnic-style table under the trees, but don’t let this casual vibe fool you; the wine is absolutely luxurious. In fact, I had my favorite wine of the day at Viña de Liceaga (another red wine, of course); I bought two bottles of it! It was also very reasonably priced, in my opinion. Indoor seating is available, but I prefer drinking outdoors among the grapes. Once you’ve finished tasting, stroll past the outdoor tables to check out the gorgeous, sprawling vineyards.

I enjoyed this winery and vineyard so much that I forgot to take a picture; it looks like you’ll have to visit it yourself to understand what I mean.

Vinos Melchum

Address: 22756 Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico

I saved the most scenic for last; the panoramic mountain views from Vinos Melchum are something to write home about. While the interior of this winery feels like a palace, the exterior is even more memorable. Sitting on the balcony and looking over the landscape was probably the highlight of my day. Oh, and the wine was excellent too!

Vinos Melchum is located at Hacienda Guadalupe, which is a hotel. Thinking of spending the night in Valle de Guadalupe? This may be the perfect place.

Where to Eat in Valle de Guadalupe

When asked which world destination has the best food, my mind immediately jumps to New Orleans, Louisiana; however, Valle de Guadalupe takes a close second in my book. Specifically, I am talking about the food served at the Finca Altozano restaurant. This farm-to-table-style restaurant and coffee shop also has a vineyard, so it fits nicely into your Valle de Guadalupe wine tour itinerary. Chef Javier Plascencia, who helped define Baja Med cuisine, is truly a culinary genius. I am a picky eater and normally should not be your go-to person for food advice, but trust me when I say that Finca Altozano is one of the best restaurants out there.

Nearby “Must-Do” Attraction: El Mirador

You may think the picture above was taken in Santorini, Greece, but it is actually El Mirador in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico! El Mirador translates to “the lookout” or “the viewpoint,” which is a pretty accurate description of its offerings. If you are coming from San Diego, El Mirador is a great halfway point to stop and relax for a bit. I also highly recommend taking a trip to this astounding viewpoint if you stay in Valle de Guadalupe. There is a Mexican farmer’s market and public restroom on site. Please note you need to pay to use the restroom (I gave a quarter, but pricing may have changed since my visit).

I wish I could’ve spent longer than a day in Valle de Guadalupe, but I can honestly say I did everything I would’ve liked to do. I have been to other parts of Mexico, such as Tulum and Bacalar, but Valle de Guadalupe was such a unique experience. In my opinion, you haven’t truly seen Mexico until you’ve visited Baja California!

I mentioned that I took a day trip from San Diego to visit the Valle de Guadalupe wineries, but I didn’t tell you that I had started my vacation in Hawaii! San Diego is a great place to stop and relax if you are flying between Hawaii and the continental United States. Thinking of building Hawaii into your Valle de Guadalupe itinerary?
