Florida is known as “The Sunshine State,” so you’d expect to always be in shorts and a t-shirt, right? While it is on the warmer side year-round, you may want to adjust your packing list if you plan on visiting during December, January, and February. If you are wondering what to wear in Orlando during the winter, you came to the right place. I am a resident, so I have as much experience with its winter weather as one could get! Follow this expertly-created packing guide to keep yourself comfortable and cozy in Central Florida’s unconventional winter weather.

What to Wear During the Day

Orlando’s daytime winter weather is best described as the northeast’s version of Spring or Autumn. I recommend wearing either a short- or long-sleeved shirt with pants. If you opt for a short-sleeved shirt, consider bringing along a light jacket. Those who run cold, like me, may even wear a long-sleeved shirt AND bring a light jacket. Because Orlando’s daytime winter temperatures fluctuate, layering is always the name of the game.

There may occasionally be a “hot” day, particularly at the beginning of December and end of February. For that reason, I recommend packing a pair of shorts. You may not use them, but better safe than sorry!

The first image was taken of my (slightly crazy) husband in early January – please note I was ABSOLUTELY not wearing shorts. The second image was taken in late February.

What to Wear at Night

As you’d expect, it does get colder at night during the winter in Orlando. I’d argue pants are a must, but, on warmer winter nights, I have seen a few (crazy) people wearing shorts. Whether you wear a short- or long-sleeved shirt is up to you, but it should always be paired with a sweatshirt or jacket (preferably a bit heavier than the jacket you wore during the day). I am personally not a fan of the short-sleeved shirt with a sweatshirt/jacket combination, but my husband runs warmer than me, and he was comfortable in this.

The first image below was taken in early December at night. It was a little chilly, but it was a warmer night than usual, so I was able to get away with wearing a long-sleeved dress. The second image below was taken in late December; much colder, but I was fine in a short-sleeved shirt, sweatshirt, and pants.

FAQ

Is winter a good time to visit Orlando?

Winter, in my opinion, is the perfect time to visit Orlando! Shorter lines at theme parks, streets decorated for the holidays, and generally comfortable weather are all reasons that make this Central Florida city the ideal winter destination.

Should I bring a bathing suit?

Most days are too chilly to go in the pool. I’d be a liar if I said I’d never done an Orlando winter swim; however, I have only done it once or twice and wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for a visitor. If you are staying in a hotel with a hot tub, that is a different story; ABSOLUTELY bring your bathing suit if that is the case. Moral of the story: review your itinerary and amenities of your accommodations, and use your judgment!

Do I need to pack heavy winter clothing for Orlando in the winter?

The short answer is, no, you do not need to pack heavy winter clothing. However, I have seen people really dress for the season (unnecessarily, in my opinion). As I stated before, it can get “cold” at night, but a light jacket is usually appropriate. I don’t even have a big winter coat in my Florida closet!

Are there any specific clothing items or accessories I should avoid bringing to Orlando in the winter?

You should avoid packing bulky winter gear and excessive layers, as it is usually unnecessary. You might get chilly, or even cold, but it will almost never be enough to justify excessive layers or a heavy winter coat.

What shoes should I wear?

I prefer sneakers during the winter, but I have worn sandals during the day. Sneakers are the safe choice that I definitely recommend packing; whether you bring anything else should be decided by your itinerary, the weather report, and whether you run hot or cold.
